Deteriorating Zuhair’s Health :

Zuhair Mohamed Al-Shehabi and Jalal Al Fardan were taken to Bahrain Defense Force hospital (BDF) after collapsing as a result of being 4 days on a hunger strike in their cell at Isa Town detention centre. Both were arrested on 28th October 2004 in a car parade in support of the prisoner of conscience, Abdul-Hadi Al-Khuwaj and the dissolution of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights.
On 11th November, both were taken to the public prosecutor who decided to extend their detention for another 15 days even thought no evidence of wrongdoing was found against them. Since then, they and other one inmates protested against this unfair decision in form of hunger strike. They are still on hunger strike and determined to continue their hunger strike till they are free.

Abdul Hadi & Other Detainees to Go on Hunger Strike :

Abdul Hadi Al Khawaja has reportedly vowed to go on a hunger strike in his prison cell from Sunday 14th November 2004, demanding the release of 13 people arrested during rallies held to call for his own release. He is also demanding that all charges against the protesters be dropped. Mr. Al Khawaja vowed that he would continue the hunger strike until the government releases the detainees.
Detainees in other detention centre are also planning to go on a hunger strike on Monday 15th November 2004, protesting against being in custody without any evidence against them. Three of them are already started their hunger strike as mentioned above. All detainees were arrested in rallies supporting Abdul-Hadi and are facing charges that can reach 27 years imprisonment.

Released Detainees and Some are Believed to be Taken as Hostages :

Eight people arrested during protests over the detention of Abdulhadi Al Khawaja were released . The eight are Abdulla Mulla Hassan Zainuldine, Kameel Mahdi Saleh, Mohammed Ramadhan Mohammed Shaaban, Mohsin Ibrahim Khamis, Khalil Ibrahim Ali, Abdulshaheed Hussein Al Qayyim, Ali Joma’a Salman and Hussein Jaffer Hussein.
They were released as no evidence was found against them according to the Public Persecutor. The remaining 13 detainees were remanded in custody for a further two weeks pending investigation.
One of the detainees, Ali Hassan, was beaten by 12 of the security forces at Khamis detention centre after complaining about the condition of his cell. This centre is known for its abuses and excessive use of force with detainees. There were couples of reports previously on abuses of this particular centre.
